A comparative study of polyherbal Unani formulations in gestational Urinary tract infections

Abstract
Introduction: To compare the efficacy of two polyherbal Unani formulation in gestational urinary tract infections (GUTIs).
Methods: A prospective, randomized, comparative trial was conducted at Nizamia Tibbia College. Group A (n=20) received mucilage of Althaea officinalis (5ml) with 2.5g powder of Sphaeranthus indicus, Euphorbia hypericifolia, Tribulus terrestris and Sharbat Anar shireen (Punica granatum) 10 ml where as Group B (n=20) received 2.5 g powder of Citrulus vulgaris seeds, Cucumis melo seed and Sphaeranthus indicus orally twice daily after meals for three consecutive months. The primary outcome included cured measured as negative urine culture and alleviation of GUTIs symptoms. The secondary outcomes included absence of pus cell in urine analysis, apgar score, prevention of complication of GUTIs and perinatal outcome. The results were analyzed with chi-square, Fisher exact test and Student t test with alpha 0.05.
Results: The cure rate in Group A and B was similar with 50% response. Both groups were equally effective in relieving the GUTIs symptoms (P7, good perinatal outcome with no preterm labour, and intrauterine growth retardation. No maternal and fetal adverse effects were noted.
Conclusion: Both groups were equally effective for the treatment of gestational urinary tract infections without any maternal and fetal adverse effects.
